Helpful Definitions

SAQ Levels
  • SAQ A - Full card handling outsourced. Website only displays links (no credit card fields embedded unless securely iframe-based).
  • SAQ A-EP - Church website plays a role in initiating the transaction, even if processing is outsourced.
  • SAQ D - Church stores, processes, or transmits cardholder data internally — such as maintaining a database of card numbers or operating internal systems that handle payment data. This is rare and typically only applies if the church has built its own giving solution or performs highly customized processing. Full PCI DSS compliance and heavy validation are required.
PCI DSS Compliance Level

Stands for Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. The Compliance Level tells you how big a vendor’s payment processing operation is and what they must do to stay secure. It ranges from Level 1 (largest vendors, most requirements) to Level 4 (smaller vendors, fewer transactions).

PCI Compliant Manner

When someone says a payment is processed in a PCI Compliant Manner, it means it was handled in a way that meets all the required security standards for storing, processing, or transmitting credit card data. This includes things like:

  1. Using secure connections (like HTTPS)
  2. Not storing card info on your church’s systems
  3. Following best practices to protect against fraud
